Hi, my name is Qelsey

(Pronounced KELL-see.  It’s a made up name, but I’ve had it since birth so I’ve never known the difference!)

A few years ago I was like you, I thought I should be further along in life, and I put so much stress on myself because I felt I should have accomplished more by now!

I compared myself to others and could see I was trailing far behind, at least that’s the story I believed.

I was on the highway between Managua and Jinotepe (in the middle of Nicaragua), with tears fogging up the visor on my helmet. I’d have to open it a bit to let some air in, but that was a problem because the rain kept hitting my eyes making it hard to see.

I’d been traveling with my boyfriend for 6 months on our motorcycles through Central America. I’d left my career back home, sold all my belongings and had everything dwindled down to yellow duffle bag strapped behind me.

The rain started to flood the road and the water was rising up to my foot pegs, I was angry and sad and severely irritated the car ahead of me was going so slow!

I was out here getting rained on and they were inside their warm cozy DRY car, couldn’t they move over or get on with it?

I went to pass them, but hit the side of the street instead and wound up under my bike with my head just above water.

I gave up.

Sitting there with water pouring into my jacket, I didn’t try to move or struggle anymore. I just sat in the rising water and didn’t have an ounce of energy to keep fighting what seemed an endlessly uphill battle.

My then boyfriend, the one the tears were for earlier, rode up behind and helped me lift the 500lb bike off me.

Now, it was no denying that I was a mess.

My emotions had gotten a hold of me and I was trying to keep it together, but I couldn’t hold it altogether for much longer, and everyone (even the driver of that slow car) knew it… How did I get here?

How did I loose control of my life and go from having it all together, an actress working for the top commercial casting directors in the city, to sitting in a puddle of water with everything I owned soaking wet.

I hit my wall in that moment and knew I had to stop running.

Maybe that’s what this whole trip was about, running from how I was feeling.

Trying to get the next thing to make me feel happy.

I was completely stuck.  I saw other’s happy and laughing, it made sense that you can enjoy life, and you don’t need all the money in the world or to be a hit star. I just didn’t know how.

I was trying to get somewhere, to get something but couldn’t figure out what.

The problem I had was: I believed every negative thought I had.

I was stuck in a negative loop, a story running in my mind over and over and I’d get lost for hours thinking “What if” or “I should have known” or “I could have”.

If I slipped down a negative thought-hole I could be done for days.

I could go through bags of chips like a champ and I could convince myself of every reason why I was a failure and why nothing would ever change.

Then again, if you saw me on the street you’d never know I struggled with these negative thoughts. I did not appear upset, needy or sad… I made an effort to be friendly, bubbly and helpful, even if I felt lousy on the inside.

That’s when I decided I HAD to make a change to my mindset.

I didn’t know how or what needed to happen but the decision was the only place I had to start. Because if I continued this road I’d have an even worse accident or add some other unnecessary pain to my life.

ALL THE SUDDEN I KNEW THAT

I Want To Take Better Care Of Myself

Up until then I tried ignoring how I felt and pushing the thoughts down.  Telling myself they weren’t important and I’d figure it out ‘later’.   (As we know that didn’t work, I wound up in a puddle, a very large dirty puddle.)

Then I tried fixing my internal issues with a brand new kitten! I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t have any direction so I tried what I could.

He was the most adorable, and endorphins worked for a while, but it wasn’t a solution. I was back unhappy, confused & unfulfilled before long.

We finished the motorcycle trip and I carried my new baby  to my sister’s where she was about to have her first baby!

That is when it happened.

Probably like how someone referred you to this page, I was referred Russell Simmons’ book ‘Success Through Stillness’.

I’d heard of meditation before, but didn’t realize how it could help me.  Until I started to understand how it worked and gave it a shot for myself. And guess what?

For the first time, I saw this was a solution that seemed to work!

And that’s when I realized it wasn’t my fault! It was because I was believing my thoughts and assuming that every negative thought I had was true.

My mind was my master, I was not the master of my mind!

No wonder I was struggling to make it through the day!

The cards were stacked against me…

For years, I had been thinking that I was my thoughts.

I didn’t have control over which thoughts I used to build on and which need to be seen for what they were: just a passing thought. When I figured out that I am not my thoughts, then I was finally able to break out of those chains and get the results I deserved!

I no longer attach my identity or self-worth to passing thoughts, instead I am empowered to take a breath, observe the thoughts and let them go.

The real problem is my thinking was holding me back from being who I really wanted to be.

Those stories in my head were keeping me from living life the way I wanted, they were like a dead weight holding me down.

There’s a big difference in how I live when I am believing my negative thoughts.

 

Once I realized that I am not my thoughts, that’s when I started to enjoy life where I am, and that switch happened really FAST!
